From Long Beach to Mars: Rocket Lab’s Bold Journey with ESCAPADE




When we think of space exploration, our minds often drift to the moon, the International Space Station, or distant galaxies captured by powerful telescopes. However, an exciting new chapter in space exploration is unfolding right here in Long Beach, Calif. Rocket Lab USA, Inc. (Nasdaq: RKLB), a global leader in launch services and space systems, has successfully packed and shipped two Mars-bound spacecraft to Cape Canaveral, FL. These twin spacecraft, named Blue and Gold, are part of the Escape and Plasma Acceleration and Dynamics Explorers (ESCAPADE) heliophysics mission.

Rocket Lab designed, built, integrated, and tested these spacecraft for the University of California Berkeley’s Space Science Laboratory and NASA. The journey of Blue and Gold from concept to launch is a testament to innovation, collaboration, and sheer determination. 



The story begins at Rocket Lab’s Spacecraft Production Complex and headquarters in Long Beach, California. Here, Blue and Gold underwent comprehensive assembly, integration, and testing. The final closeout activities included installing spacecraft solar arrays and multi-layer insulation (MLI) blankets. These meticulous steps were crucial to ensuring the spacecraft's resilience and functionality for their mission to Mars.

After completing these milestones, the spacecraft were carefully packaged and shipped to Florida for launch. The move marked a significant step forward, bringing the ESCAPADE mission closer to its ultimate goal: exploring the Red Planet.



Upon arrival at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center (KSC) Launch Complex, Rocket Lab team members transferred Blue and Gold to a cleanroom for post-transport inspections and tests. This transition phase is critical, as it involves thorough checks to ensure the spacecraft are in perfect condition after their journey from Long Beach.

Once these inspections are complete, the team will prepare to fuel the spacecraft in anticipation of their upcoming launch on Blue Origin’s New Glenn rocket. This phase is the final countdown before Blue and Gold embark on their voyage to Mars.

"We’ve already been to the Moon for NASA, so we’re excited to build on that and send Rocket Lab technology deeper into the solar system, this time to the Red Planet,” said Rocket Lab founder and CEO Sir Peter Beck. His enthusiasm reflects the company’s commitment to advancing humanity’s understanding of space.


The ESCAPADE mission is a collaborative triumph involving dedicated teams from Rocket Lab, NASA, and the University of California Berkeley. Rob Lillis, ESCAPADE Principal Investigator and Associate Director for Planetary Science at the UC Berkeley Space Sciences Laboratory, expressed his gratitude for Rocket Lab’s unwavering dedication. “Interplanetary spacecraft must be much more resilient than earth satellites, and developing not one, but two of these probes almost from scratch was no small feat,” Lillis said. 

The collaboration exemplifies the power of teamwork and innovation. Rocket Lab’s agility and tireless efforts, often referred to as their "hero mode," have kept the project on course. This spirit of partnership is key to the mission’s success.



Once launched, the ESCAPADE mission will measure plasma and magnetic fields around Mars. These observations are vital for understanding the processes that strip atoms from Mars’ magnetosphere and upper atmosphere. By unraveling these mysteries, scientists hope to gain critical insights into Martian climate evolution.

The data collected by Blue and Gold will help humanity understand Mars’ past, present, and future. It’s a quest that could ultimately inform future missions, including potential human exploration of the Red Planet.
