Sofia, the bustling capital of Bulgaria, recently witnessed a groundbreaking event that promises to reshape the nation’s energy landscape. In an impressive gathering that included Bulgarian Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev, Energy Minister Vladimir Malinov, and U.S. Ambassador Kenneth Merten, a significant contract was inked. The Engineering Services Contract for two AP1000® reactors to be constructed at the Kozloduy site was signed by Westinghouse Electric Company, Hyundai Engineering & Construction Co., and Bulgaria’s very own Kozloduy NPP - New Build EAD. This event marks a pivotal moment for Bulgaria, setting the stage for a future dominated by clean and efficient nuclear energy.

This contract is not just a piece of paper; it’s a roadmap to energy independence. With Bulgaria’s extensive 50-year history in nuclear construction, this new project will further enhance the country’s capabilities, contributing to the independence, diversification, and stability of nuclear energy across Europe. The recently signed contract is a treasure trove of opportunities and advancements. It encompasses site planning for the installation of two cutting-edge Westinghouse AP1000® units, the most advanced Generation III+ nuclear reactors available today. But that’s not all.
